Stacia was doing gardening work in the front, side and back yard of her lovely Leesburg, Virginia house. Approximately three hours into her landscaping project, Stacia looked down and noticed that her special family heirloom ring was no longer on her right thumb. This was no ordinary 14 karat yellow gold diamond ring. It happened to be a wedding band that was once worn by Stacia’s grandmother many years back in the past and at some point in time it was gifted to Stacia.
My client and her partner used a metal detector to search all of the flower beds, recycling bags and the entire front and back yard but all of their search and recovery efforts led to no avail. That’s when they turned to the internet and looked for additional help. Eventually they came across my website: METAL DETECTING ADVENTURES INC which links my clients to THE RING FINDERS, an elite international directory of metal detectorists who specialize in finding lost rings for people all over the world.
When I received the call for help from Stacia and her partner Donn, I asked them every question imaginable in order for me to get a better idea as to how Stacia may have lost the ring and to determine if I could effectively offer my services to the couple.
I told the two of them that it was possible that the ring was not lost outside but rather in the garbage or in the recycling bin. Because Stacia didn’t know the last time that she saw the ring on her finger, there was always the possibility that it was lost in the house or in a public environment. However, we all felt that it was most likely lost somewhere outside on their property.
A couple of days after we all spoke on the phone, I drove early in the morning to Leesburg, Virginia to conduct the search. The couple showed me all of the places where my client had been weeding, trimming and hauling. There were a few places in the front of the house and on the left side, as well. Most of the searching, however, would be focused in the backyard. Stacia had been working all along the parameter of the fence line in the flower beds, walking across the center grassy lawn area and it was possible that the ring fell into one of the recycling bags.
Once we finished reviewing all of the possible places where the ring could have been lost, I gathered up my metal detecting gear and headed to the back of the property to begin the search.
I spent the first two and a half hours metal detecting every inch of the areas where the couple and I reviewed and nothing turned up. I made sure that I detected under every shrub and bush as well as check all of the planters and flower boxes. When I was unsuccessful in the backyard, I detected the side of the house, in the flower beds where the wood chips covered the ground and scanned a stretch of 10 feet by 45 feet of lawn where Stacia walked with her gardening tools. Next, I detected the front of the house which included the flower beds and grassy lawn. Unfortunately, I still did not find the ring anywhere.
I gave an update to the clients and I suggested that I check their garbage and recycling cans since Stacia’s irreplaceable gold ring had not turned up anywhere else up to that point. The couple agreed that that was our next best option and so I immediately got busy detecting the throw-away bags and loose items in both receptacles in the garage. After finishing the search in the garage, I still came up empty-handed.
The three of us had a final meeting to decide if we should call it quits or perhaps for me to metal detect the right side of the backyard. Stacia said she did not do any work there before learning of the disappearance of her ring. Yet, I told the couple that sometimes my clients have no memory of being in a certain place at a certain time which ended up being where the item went missing all along.
We decided to have me search the flower beds and the lawn to the right of the house in the backyard and to metal detect outside of the fenced in area as well as scan the ground where Stacia discarded some trimmings and weeds.
After 25 minutes or so of metal detecting all of the areas mentioned above, I was still not able to locate my client’s special family heirloom ring. I was pretty disheartened about it all because none of this made any sense as to why I had not already recovered it. I gathered my detecting equipment, walked through the gate, shut the gate closed and randomly decided to swing my detector over to the right of the gate where the flower bed ended on that side of the house. I really was done with the search but for some reason something told me to swing the detector over by a particular bush. Then, I took my handheld detector and scanned under the pretty plant and to my surprise, I got a signal! I looked, and there it was! The lost ring! I couldn’t believe it! You could not have written a script more thrilling than this one because I had wrapped up the search and I was heading for my vehicle to drop off my gear and say goodbye to my clients! What a fantastic finish it was!
I made sure that Stacia and Donn got a huge surprise from me! It was absolutely a memorable moment indeed! Stacia’s face turned pink and she became extremely emotional at the moment that she was reunited with her grandmother’s diamond wedding band!
I told them that had they not given me permission to search more of the backyard and beyond after finishing up in the garage, I would have never maneuvered my detector over to the right side of the gate as I made my way back to the car! I don’t know what it was that made me want to search that flower bed one more time (because I had already gone over that area hours earlier), but whatever it was, I certainly gave glory to God for helping me with the search so that I could bring such wonderful news to my clients! Again, it was certainly a fantastic finish…yes, even after the search was already over!
